Building Permits
Building permits are required for decks, driveways, sidewalks, fences, additions, landscaping, yard sheds, buildings and moved-in structures. Please be sure to review the Zoning Ordinance [PDF, 1.43 MB] prior to any construction project, no matter how big or small. You must obtain a building permit before any site construction begins.

Violation of this Ordinance may result in fines of $100 per day per violation. You must obtain a permit prior to any construction.
Any work performed in the right-of-way also requires a permit. This includes planting of trees, driveways, mailbox changes, changes to drainage, and utility services.

Zoning Ordinance and Other Applications
Please allow at least seven working days for permit review. Please contact the City Clerk (712) 336-8156 or Darren Bumgarner (712) 262-7225 Ext 143 of NWIPD for zoning questions, permit applications and fee schedule. Applications are fillable for your convenience, but the document will need to be saved and printed in order to submit the necessary drawing (electronic plan copies) and signed application. Remember to send your check separately to City Clerk, P. O. Box 345, Spirit Lake, IA 51360. Thank you.
