Open Burning Restrictions
Recently, there were incidents of burning in high winds (30 mph+) and one required fire department intervention. The fire damaged property and posed serious risks. Always ensure fires are completely out before leaving them unattended. Avoid burning during extremely dry and windy conditions as we have right now. A fire on March 13, 2025, could have been disastrous if it hadn’t been spotted in time. Please review Orleans’ fire restrictions below:
Open burning of landscape waste is permitted from September 10 to December 15 and April 2 to May 31, from dawn until dusk. However, burning near buildings within 25 feet, along the lakeshore, and on city streets or rights-of-way, is strictly prohibited. As an alternative to burning, landscape waste can be transported to the designated site found one-half mile east of Orleans on 140th Street during the growing season. Please be mindful of neighbors who may have respiratory conditions or who dry laundry outdoors. Additionally, remain vigilant for red flag warnings.
